We are on the verge of April Break and spirits are high in Room 10! We were happy to wrap-up our biographies today! We have been working hard learning about the genre of biographies. We have discussed why biographies are written and the identified the type of information that all biographioes include. After this inspiration, we partnered up with a classmate and, knowing the information that should be in a biography, came up with questions to ask our partners. After this process, we wrote our first drafts in our Thinkbooks. We have been reviewing revision strategies and once our work was revised for capital letters, proper punctuation, spacing between our words, neat handwriting, and word wall words spelled correctly, we began final drafts on lined paper. Some of us were done early so we were able to use our brand new second grade laptops to begin typing our biographies! We are very happy to have access to technology in our room as we explore a variety of ways to "publish" our work!
Have a fantastic break everyone! Mrs. Hunton

Last night, I was part of a presentation to the School Board that consisted of three other teachers from the Laconia School District and a few volunteer students. We are all taking a graduate course right now which revolves around the philosophy of place- and community-based education. This philosophy promotes the importance of the ties students make to their community, the sense of ownership they feel towards their home, and the partnerships they can build with community members. This philosophy does not separate the school and the community, rather considers the community an extension of the school and vice versa.
One way elementary school teachers in Laconia have been pursuing this philosophy is through walking field trips. This year, second graders have participated in three walking field trips. We have walked down Elm Street and made stops at establishments that offer goods and services such as the Goss Reading Room, Leavitt Park, Fratello's Restaurant, Lakeport Fire Station and Railroad & Historical Museum, to name a few. We have also accompanied the third grade on a walking field trip where they taught us about three locations of old elementary schools in our area. Each student sketched what the buildings look like now and are used for now and paired that with three facts about what the building used to look like and offer in the past. Finally, our class took a walking field trip down to the country club to watch one of the annual sled dog races. Our hope is to continue these excursions and next we would like to travel to Wayfarer downtown in order to see raw coffee beans (a good that is grown) make the journey to an actual cup of coffee (a good that is made)! Please explore the photos of our trip to the sled dog races below! |
