This week, students continued experimenting with our classroom rocks! We used tools similar to the ones Mr. Santti brought in to examine a variety of rock sizes. We used three different sifters to sift the rocks into three groups depending on size. We sifted out sand, gravel, and pebbles! The students love getting to do hands-on activities! These hands-on activities also allow us to practice our writing as we record our findings in our science notebooks. Groups collected the sand they sifted out in vials. Next week, those vials will also be filled with water to demonstrate silt. Also, if you have not checked our out our article in the Daily Sun, please click here!

Today was an exciting day for second grade! Though we have been experiencing some technical difficulties with testing this week, this has allowed us to practice our flexibility and we were able to experience a nice break today! Today, Derek, from Wildlife Encounters visited our school and brought some exotic friends along with him! Derek gave a wonderful presentation about the importance of preserving our environment in order to protect our habitats and the animals that live in them all over the globe! Derek toured the globe with us by sharing an alligator from North America, a macaw from South America, a Burmese python from Asia, and a wallaby from Australia! A lucky member from our class even got to help hold the python! Yikes! After this presentation, Kevin Santti, the father of one of our students, came in to share his experiences with New Hampshire rocks and minerals. We began this presentation by making observations in our science notebooks about a rock we selected from a bucket of rocks that the Santiis collected at Ruggles Mine. We then learned about the tools we can use to forage for rocks and gemstones, and even got a look at some of the gold and gemstones Mr. Santti has collected over the past five years! We even had a visit from the Laconia Daily Sun, so keep an eye out for an article about this event in the paper! Enjoy the photos below! I will add them to our main gallery.
